Session type:
Case Study

Session duration:
45 minutes

Presented by:

Leo Awadzi

About this Case Study

This session will focus on the similarities agile teams share with professional sports organisations, and how sports principles can be applied to agile teams. It will focus specifically on the NBA franchise, the San Antonio Spurs, who have had a period of continued success spanning over 20 years, which can predominately be attributed to:

  • a decentralised management culture with defined central pillars that govern decision making across the organisation
  • a focus on empowering players and staff, allowing freedom of expression in a loosely defined organisational framework
  • a constantly evolving style of play based on the capabilities and skills of team members
I will focus on showing how agile teams can incorporate similar concepts in their organisations, using sport as a framing device, to achieve robust and sustained excellence.
